“My work is only concerned with going to the edges and seeing what reality looks like when you mess with the rules and find truth outside the system”

Russ Jones (b.1990) is an ultra-contemporary artist based in London.

Russ uses global exposure to inform a creative process that investigates the commonalities of human existence, creating interventions that unify viewers and participants through shared experience. His multi-disciplinary approach utilises spiritually significant raw materials, found objects and abstraction to create interventions exploring common themes of self awareness, loneliness, meaning(lessness) and death.

His commitment to participant observation ethnographic research to find unique perspectives is an integral part of his practice. These journeys, including counter-poaching operations in Africa, spending time homeless in Paris and living in the wild mountains of Kashmir enable a deeper connection to the remote wisdom hidden behind our narrow expereince. His practice seeks to bring a depth of understanding of the human experience by finding common truths between commonly oppsoing perspectives.

Russ retrieves the essence and materiality of the environments and communities he encounters. His work seeks to capture the beauty of the various manifestations of the human spirit through incorporation of creative goods and techniques from across the globe, using a secular perspective of non-secular local religions to understand spiritual practices in an area and materiality and fashion to understand the material nature of desitantions. Each piece is a narrative, offering viewers a window into the stories and landscapes he has been able to experience and shape his artistic vision.

At the core of Russ' philosophy is a belief in the power of art to inspire and transform through subversion and acceptance, challenging and tricking viewers to enjoy the beauty in aspects of the human experience furthest away from what they may normally appreciate.
